Getting Connected in the City

Because of the layout of the city, analysts have determined that a citywide municipal Wi-Fi signal isn't feasible. However, the mayor and the advisory board haven't given up hope, yet.

Citywide Wi-Fi isn’t feasible, at least that’s what the firm hired to look into placing municipal Wi-Fi throughout New York City is saying. Based on data gathered from other large cities Diamond Management and Technology Consultants Inc. believes that there are better ways the city of New York can get connected. Fortunately for those who live in the city the Mayor and his advisory board have not given up. Robert Lieber, the deputy mayor for economic development said the committee is working to “determine the most effective and feasible ways to increase broadband accessibility among New Yorkers”.

So, why the push to make New York Wi-Fi accessible? More and more people are purchasing notebook computers and internet equipped mobile phones. With the new iPhone on the market New Yorkers can surf the internet from anywhere at anytime as long as they have an internet connection. One of the main reasons for the push for municipal Wi-Fi is to get everyone connected. Those in low income areas may have a computer but not access to the internet. Providing municipal Wi-Fi would introduce those low income residents to the internet and the amazing things they can do.

Currently there are many Wi-Fi locations in the city. Coffee shops, internet cafes, and book stores are equipped with Wi-Fi but most of the time these services charge a fee. Municipal Wi-Fi is available in some areas including the city parks but access is limited. Until the city can give everyone access they won’t be satisfied.
