By: Ryan Hartley A city sanitation worker has been accused of fraud, after being caught allegedly defrauding the city's Housing Development Corporation. The employee, Rafael Rosario, lived in a subsidized apartment in the Bronx during 2006 and 2007. The Department of Investigation has released information detailing the extent of Mr. Rosario's alleged transgressions.
Mr. Rosario is accused of lying to housing authorities during that time period, according to reports. He told the city's Housing Development Corporation that he was a FedEx employee. During this time, he claimed far less money than he actually made, in order to qualify for greatly increased subsidies. Since The HDC awards subsidies based upon income and family size, among other factors, Mr. Rosario was taking money to which he was not entitled.
Mr. Rosario is the second employee to have been charged with defrauding the Section 8 housing program. According to court documents, a teach was accused in June of lying about her income, and qualified for $27,000 worth of benefits which she did not earn. The New York State Department of Investigation has detailed the arrest of Mr. Rosario, and has released some information about how much money Mr. Rosario received that he he wasn't entitled to. According to the DOI, Mr. Rosario was responsible for stealing 12,000 from the housing subsidy program.
