Miller in Hot Water over Parking Lot

By: James R. Lindamood Darren Miller is what some would call resourceful. Others classify him as a criminal. Regardless of how you look at it Miller is raking in the cash. At least he was until last week. That’s when the city decided to take back the four acre parcel Miller had been using as a parking lot. According to the New York times Miller received a letter in 2005 from the Department of Housing demanding that he vacate the land. Based on reports the land actually belonged to a New York developer but that did not stop Miller from renting out the space to vehicles owners at a monthly fee. Miller claims to have sent a letter back to the housing department with his intentions of claiming and using the land. The legality of Millers claim is under investigation and will likely take years to sort out. For the time being Miller is facing several criminal charges. Charles J. Hynes, Brooklyn’s District Attorney held a press conference earlier in the week where he proclaimed that Miller “gave new meaning to the word Chutzpah” for his illegal seizure and use of the land. The charges Miller faces include illegal dumping, dismantling cars without the proper license and permit, and trespassing.
